How to recover saved wifi passwords in Android

Be it your neighbour’s network or your friend’s (whom you visit once a year) wifi, those pesky twisted hard-to-remember passwords ask to be forgotten. But your trusty Android phone remembers them all. Wouldn’t it be great if it could tell them to you?

Well, if you have a rooted device, you’re in luck. You can quickly re-discover the password of all networks you’ve saved them for.  Without root you’re out of luck as you cannot browse the root folder structure.

Use your favourite file manager and browse to /data/misc/wifi to locate and open the

android-wifi-password-recovery

  • wpa_supplicant.conf file for WPA networks, or
  • wep_supplicant.conf file for WEP networks

Inside you’ll find all the previously saved networks and their passwords, neatly stored in clear text for your convenience.
